Menopause weight gain is a challenge many women face. For decades, the go-to response has been dieting — often meaning food deprivation and eating meals we don’t enjoy simply because we “should.” I hear it all the time: “Just tell me what to eat.”
This kind of relationship with food can feel punishing. It’s time for a shift — from restriction to nourishment.
From Dieting to Nourishing
When we focus on nourishing our bodies instead of starving them, everything changes. Balanced macronutrients — proteins, essential fats, and good-quality carbohydrates — form the foundation of this approach.
Unfortunately, many modern diets are overloaded with poor-quality carbs and lack vital nutrients. When we don’t get enough protein or essential fats, our bodies cry “hungry!” leading to cravings for sugary or processed foods.
Ask yourself:
- How much protein do you eat each day — and is it consistent? (Think meat, fish, eggs, yogurt, nuts, beans, tofu, tempeh.)
- How much essential fat do you consume daily? (Think olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, butter, animal fats.)
- Are you including good-quality carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables?
- Does your weekday eating differ from weekends?
Understanding Cravings
Cravings for cakes, pastries, chocolate, bread, pasta, or ice cream — all rich in sugar and flour — are common. These ultra-processed foods are designed to keep us wanting more.
The key is giving your body what it needs, not what it craves. That’s how we regulate weight, reduce brain fog, and increase energy levels.
A New Approach
Rather than relying on another restrictive diet, try this balanced, mindful method:
- Design daily menus with macronutrients you enjoy.
- Identify trigger foods that cause you to overeat — and create practical solutions.
- Relax. Your relaxation response boosts metabolism, appetite regulation, and calorie burning.
- Release stress. Letting go of self-chosen stressors helps balance hunger and cravings.
Menopause is not a time of loss — it’s a time to step into your metabolic power, to become more self-aware and empowered than ever before.
