What is a leadership style?
A leadership style is the approach you take when guiding, motivating, and managing others to achieve shared goals. It influences how you communicate, make decisions, and handle challenges.
Your leadership style will naturally be shaped by your personality, experiences, and values. Understanding your leadership style allows you to recognise your strengths and identify areas for development. It also helps you adapt your approach to different situations and team dynamics.
By becoming more aware of your leadership style, you can lead with authenticity and confidence, building stronger relationships and inspiring greater trust among your team.
Authoritarian Leadership
Also known as autocratic, authoritarian leaders have a clear plan of who needs to do what and they will communicate this in a ‘top-down’ way. This leadership style is traditional in its use of control and power, which means the blindside can be arrogance or expectation. On the plus side, some people benefit from this type of strict control.
Participative Leadership
Democratic, also known as participative leaders tend to encourage group members to participate. This is seen to inspire them to feel engaged. However, usually, a participative leader will have the final say in the decision. This is an effective leadership style when applied correctly, but it can fall down if leaders override the participants too frequently.
Hands off or Laissez-Faire
Hands off leaders can be called delegative. They offer little or no guidance, expertise or insight to the rest of the team. Although this can be effective if the team is strong enough, it can lead to confusion and lack of clarity in roles and expectations.
Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership focuses on inspiring and motivating teams to achieve more than they thought possible. These leaders lead with vision and enthusiasm, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. A transformational leader nurtures innovation and helps employees connect their personal goals to the organisation’s wider mission, driving long-term success.
Coaching leadership
A coaching leadership style is all about development and growth. Coaching leaders take the time to understand their team members’ strengths and potential, guiding them through encouragement and constructive feedback. This approach builds confidence, supports learning, and helps individuals reach their goals while strengthening overall team performance and engagement.
Transactional Leadership
Transactional leadership is based on structure, rules, and clear expectations. Leaders using this style concentrate on achieving specific goals through rewards, recognition, and corrective actions. It works well in environments that require consistency, efficiency, and adherence to procedures, providing clarity to employees and ensuring that tasks are completed to standard.
Democratic leadership
Democratic (or participative) leadership focuses on collaboration and participation. Leaders who adopt this style actively involve their team members in decision-making, valuing their input and ideas. This approach fosters engagement, accountability, and a sense of ownership, creating a motivated and empowered workforce while promoting transparency and trust within the team.
Situational Leadership
Situational leadership involves adapting your approach based on the needs of the team and the situation at hand. Leaders assess their employees’ skills, experience, and motivation, adjusting their level of guidance and support accordingly. This flexible leadership style ensures that teams receive the right balance of direction and autonomy to succeed.
When to use different types of leadership styles
Effective leaders know that different situations call for different approaches. For example:
- Authoritative leadership can be effective during uncertain times when clarity is needed
- Affiliative leadership can help strengthen relationships within a team
- Pace-setting leadership works well when motivating high-performing teams
- Laissez-faire leadership suits teams that thrive with independence
- Transformational and coaching leadership styles are ideal for inspiring long-term growth and development
The key is to recognise when each style will have the greatest impact and adapt accordingly to achieve the best results.
How to determine your leadership style
To determine or decide on your leadership style, start by reflecting on how you naturally lead others. Think about how you make decisions, manage challenges, and interact with your team. Asking for feedback from colleagues or mentors can help you understand how your leadership is perceived.
Leadership coaching can also offer valuable insight, helping you uncover your natural strengths and areas for improvement. However, it’s important to remember that no single style is better than another. What matters most is understanding your approach and being able to adapt it to suit different situations and people.
