All successful professionals understand the importance of physical charisma in securing – and keeping – their business. A research study has shown that only 7% of what you communicate to others comes from the words that you actually say, with 55% being conveyed through your body language.
But the migration of so much of our professional lives onto virtual platforms in recent months raises the question of how we can continue to use body language to our advantage when working online. In terms of recruitment, body language in a video interview can also say more than you might think.
We have put together a list of five essential elements for success in the virtual workplace.
Use breathing techniques
This first tip can be implemented before the working day has begun, and can be used alongside even busy schedules to restore calm. Spend time focussing on breathing steadily, in through the nose and out through the mouth, counting the in and out breaths to compose and steady yourself.
Make appropriate eye-contact
As an Executive, it is important that you instil trust in your clients and colleagues. Making and maintaining eye-contact can do this, by boosting oxytocin, the hormone which forges social bonds. Avoid looking down, as this can give the impression that you are distracted.
Wear the clothes you would if you were in the room
Don’t let your standards of presentability slip when home working. Dressing smartly can increase your own feelings of confidence and those who keep their appearance neat are more likely to be attributed with positive values and qualities.
Avoid touching your face
Health professionals advise against face-touching to prevent the spread of infection, but gestures such as nose scratching, hair smoothing or ear tugging are also indicators of nervousness. Consciously resisting the impulse to make these movements will show that you are collected and at ease.
Be aware of your posture and position
Adjusting the way you hold your body not only sends the signal that you are engaged and alert to your colleagues through the camera, it also sends these signals to your own body. Sitting up straight, with your feet flat on the floor, actually increases chemicals in the bloodstream that lead to a feeling of mental balance, and it reduces stress hormones.
